Working with deer

Heenan Workroom Deerhandlers stand out head and shoulder above all others.

Here's why - It's the way in which The Heenan Workroom holds deer so securely between it's totally padded walls.

WALLS TOTALLY PADDED FOR ANIMAL WELFARE

Four inch thick padding is fixed to a rail at both the top and the bottom on each of two walls, when these two walls are brought together, the padding over the top rails catch the deer by the neck, the padding at the bottom catches the lower leg, the body of the deer no matter how large or small sinks into the padding between the rails, thus preventing the deer from moving in any direction. The deer are held firmly, comfortably and return to the handler time after time without resistance.

CHOICE OF ASSEMBLY

The Heenan Workroom can be assembled with the hydraulic controls on either the moving platform or the still platform.

GREATER OPERATOR SAFETY

Both platforms raise and lower with the walls - so the operator is always in a commanding and safer position above the animal.

ANY SIZE DEER

You can work with and handle animals any size - from Fallow to Wapati and Elk Bulls - one at a time or several.

CUT VET COSTS

Because of efficiency of handling deer through the 'WORKROOM', routine Veterinarian costs are able to be dramatically reduced.

CUT DRUG COST

Stag farmers benefit further savings through only needing to use local anaesthetic at velveting. These jobs are done quicker, easier and with greater safety to animal and man than ever before.

OPERATES QUICKLY AND SMOOTHLY

Padded walls can operate from open to closed in 4 seconds.

Easy to install

The mono base frame of the Workroom allows it to be installed on any type of floor - however for the sake of easy cleaning most deer farmers pre-assembled-components.jpgchoose a concrete floor. A number of clients have incorporated a hose wash in their deer handling facility. The mono base frame of the Workroom also allows the whole unit to be assembled and then skidded around within your deer yards - along side a wall through which deer can come from an existing pen,or race, or far enough away from a wall to create a race. Walls, sliding doors, forcing door and draughting doors can be quickly installed after the Workroom is sited to your satisfaction.

Free Plans

We have accumulated a range of plans for new facilities incorporating our clients best ideas. There are some golden rules which apply to existing yards. Send us a plan of your yards - no need to be to scale but please include measurements and with arrows indicate where the deer presently enter and exit.

HINTS ON HOW TO USE YOUR HEENAN WORKROOM

Hydraulic Pressure: The by-pass relief valve adjuster is located on the (R.H.) input side of the control valve. Should you consider you need more pressure - loosen the locking nut and with the correct size Allen Key, screw in for more, out for less pressure. As a rule of thumb, the pressure a man can stand seems just right - if the motor stalls or works too hard when a cylinder reaches the end of its stroke, the by-pass pressure is set too high. Hydraulic Controls should respond by moving the wall or platform the same direction as the lever moves. The two horizontal levers control the walls up and down and the vertical lever controls the work platform wall closed or open.

For many operations such as T.B. Testing, neck shaving, ear tagging, drenching etc, the padded walls are vertical. One at a time or several may be comfortably worked with. They do not have to be totally restrained - just closed sufficiently to allow the operator to comfortably reach and work while the deer stand quietly.

Fawning: For fawning, padded sides should be set in a V - this assists the fawn into the birthing position - back the hind back to the door, restrain, open the rear door for access and proceed with the birth assistance.

Velveting: For velveting, the padded walls should be set in Λ position. Close the handler to catch the stag on the neck just under the jaw - then lift the padded walls slightly - this tends to restrict the blood flow. So less blood is lost - more blood is retained in the Velvet as well.
